'Driving home for Christmas' is happiest journey of the year, new research reveals
It is the journey Irish people look forward to most - but their anticipation is tinged by concern for their safety too.
A new survey, published today, unsurprisingly finds that driving home for Christmas is by far the most enjoyable journey of the year.
A huge proportion of those surveyed (86pc) enjoy that drive of anticipation more than any other. And the favourite song to accompany them on the special route home? Far and away it is the 'Fairytale of New York' -not 'White Christmas' or 'Santa Claus is Coming to Town'.
A good proportion of those surveyed said they will tune in to the radio (37pc), with 33pc listening to their own playlists.
The survey was carried out by Enterprise Rent-A-Car.
It found that the Christmas trip home outstripped other 'enjoyable' journeys, such as driving to the airport for a holiday and a road trip with friends. Reassuringly, the survey also revealed that safety is a key concern for Irish drivers.
Around 50pc highlighted the fact that the most important consideration for them for the Christmas journey was getting home safely.
One-third (33pc) are worried about frost and icy roads.
Understandably, they are also concerned about the behaviour of other drivers along the way.
That was a key concern for 20pc.
George O'Connor, managing director of Enterprise Rent-A-Car Ireland, said it is important that people take the Road Safety Authority's advice on driving at this time of year.
* Never, ever drinking and driving;
* Planning your itinerary so you are sure of how you are getting home safely;
* Driving at the appropriate speed, and
* Being aware of how tiredness and fatigue can affect your driving.
