Discounts and deals galore for the savvy car-buyer

Christmas can come early, if you don't need 151 plates, says Geraldine Herbert

The motor industry is predicting a modest increase in sales at showrooms in 2015.

The start of a new year may be a good time to make resolutions, but if you are after a car bargain the end of the year is the best time to get a great deal on a new, or nearly new, car.

So while many new car buyers relish the idea of a 151 registration plate for those who are prepared to settle for a 142 or 141, the savings can be significant.

There are hidden gems in showrooms around the country. A number of cars in any dealership will have been registered as demonstration models, or will have been pre-registered. Discounts on pre-registered cars can vary wildly, so it pays to shop around but to save you some time we've scoured the country for some of the best deals and here is our pick of the bunch.

Those in the market for a small car could save nearly €3,000 on a 142 Fiesta from Rialto Motors, Dublin. They have an ex-demo model for sale at €15,250, the original list price was €18,200. Tullamore Nissan still have a selection of 2014 ex-Fleet cars, including a Micra 1.2 €16,595 now only €12,595 and a 1.5 Diesel SV Note with a list price of €20,995, now available for €16,995. Buyers in Donegal may be tempted by an ex Demo 142 Toyota Yaris 1 litre, Luna grade from Kelly's Toyota for €15,000, almost €2,500 off the list price.

But if it is style you are after in the South-West, Billy Naughtons, in Tralee have a 141 1.6 Diesel DS3 in Whisper Purple Colour and Dstyle trim that could be yours for €18,950; a saving of €2,500 on the list price.

For the buyer of the compact family car who likes to stand out from the crowd, Highland Motors are offering a 142 Citroen C4 Cactus in "Hello Yellow" with Feel trim and powered by a 1.2 Petrol engine for €18,995, which represents a saving of over €700. Other good small family car deals include a saving of €1,500 on a Ford Focus 141 Edition from Smiths of Drogheda. Priced at €19,950, it comes well equipped with 16" alloy wheels, Ford SYNC, Air Conditioning, and a leather trim 4 spoke steering wheel. A 141 registered Ford Focus is also on sale in Rialto Motors for €19,950, over €4,500 less than the original list price.

Meanwhile Morrison MINI in Tipperary have five 151 three-door MINI Hatches with an additional €1,000 off, but you need to be fast as the offer only applies to orders received by December 31st 2014.

If you're looking for something a little sporty consider the sleek and low-slung Hyundai Veloster. Hutton and Meade have three 132 registered models for sale at €15,777; the original list price was €24,995.

For an executive car without the premium price tag, Gowan Motors have an ex hire drive Peugeot 508 Active 1.6 diesel with a list price of €28,265 now on offer as a cash purchase for €22,000 representing a saving of €6,265.

Remember, if you do opt for a pre-registered car you will benefit from immediate delivery and substantial discounts but your car is technically a "used" car and this could affect the resale value. Demo cars are likely to have more miles on the clock than a lot of other pre-registered cars so there may be room for even more haggling on the price.

Apart from demo models, there are also savings to be made when manufacturers are replacing an old model. Opel has just launched a brand new Corsa, Ford the new Mondeo; while Volkswagen's new Passat will be in showrooms very soon and Mazda's new 2 is due early next year. Anyone in the market for these models should have even more room for manoeuvre.

Finally there are also reductions on brand new models. The New VW Golf has a new entry-price, now from just €19,995 which is a €400 price reduction from the 2014 model. The 300bhp Golf R has been reduced in price by €9,950 to €42,445 while the new Touareg that goes on sale in January is now priced from €69,675 for the 204bhp 3.0-litre V6 diesel, which is a price drop over the outgoing model.

For 2015 Mazda have reduced the price on the new Mazda CX-5 by €1,450 and the Mazda6 by €1,000. They are also offering a free sat nav or a €500 upgrade voucher on cars ordered by 31st Jan while Kia are offering a €400 voucher for SuperValu when you place a €400 deposit on a 151 Kia.

If you're in the market for a car this is the best time to get a deal, as showrooms are crammed with nearly-new vehicles with low mileage, some being offered at substantial discounts. Take a trip to your local car-dealers and shop around - you might be pleasantly surprised at what deals they can do for you.
