Department of Finance examines potential impact of more accurate fuel consumption and emissions figures
The Department of Finance is examining the potential impact of more accurate fuel consumption and emissions figures.
It says it is looking at the likely effects on motorists, the motor industry and, significantly, the Exchequer.
In response to a query from Independent Motors, a spokesperson said it recognises that the introduction of the new WLTP system (Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure) will more accurately reflect the CO2 emissions produced by motor vehicles than the NEDC procedure has done to date.
But it is not clear yet if it will tweak current tax bands to take account of the fact that many new cars will be shown to emit higher C02.
If the bands are left alone, that could move them onto higher taxation levels.
Figures from WLTP tests will apply to all new cars from September 1 next. They have applied to new car types since last September.
