Dealers are intensifying their focus on deals and sales for the 192-reg plate

Dealers are intensifying their focus on deals and sales for the 192-reg plate, from July 1, as new figures indicate stronger buying trends last month.

New-car registrations for May were up 4.7pc (to 6,341) compared with the corresponding month last year (6,055). But registrations overall for 2019 are running 7.6pc behind (79,343), according to SIMI statistics.

Electric car registrations are well up too; 1,902 have been registered in 2019 (1,233 were bought over all of last year).

Used imports were also up in May (4.1pc to 9,346). At 45,062, they are 3pc ahead of 2018. The figures suggest we are headed for another year of 100,000-plus imports.

The top-selling brands so far in 2019 are Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai, Ford, Skoda.

The top models are: Nissan Qashqai, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota Corolla, Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Octavia.

The Toyota Corolla was May's best-seller.
