Brisk start to outstrip January 2015 total
WITH the best part of two weeks' selling still to go, new-car registrations are quickly closing on last year's total.
Judging by the rate and level of buying, as well as reports coming back from showrooms and forecourts, the total for January looks primed to outstrip the corresponding month last year.
Up to close of business on Monday, 23,004 had been registered. The total for all of last January was 29,808 so the gap is relatively small considering the amount of 'buying' time that remains.
It is widely expected that registrations will continue to increase substantially this week and next.
And it will be most interesting to see how many new models are registered in the final two to three days of the month.
That has been a feature of some marques' activity over the past few years.
On the basis of figures to hand, Hyundai have had a racing start and were marginally in first place ahead of Toyota, followed closely by Ford with Volkswagen well back.
However, Volkswagen usually pick up strongly as the new-year weeks go by, so it would be imprudent to suggest that last year's scandal is having any effect on sales at this stage.
