Audi lift the roof on 2017 with new A5 cabriolets
Audi are adding new cabriolet versions to their A5 range, including a powerful S5. The cars are expected here from March but there is no word on price yet.
The soft-top roof is fully automated with a new one-touch opening function. It opens in 15 seconds and closes in 18 - at speeds of up to 50 kmh.
And there are interesting bits of technology coming with it, including seat belt microphones.
One of the key areas in a cabrio is the stiffness of the body and in this case they are claiming a 40pc increase in torsional rigidity.
Initially there will be just the two engines: a 2.0 TDI with 190hp and a 3.0 TDI with 218hp. It seems there is a good chance that a 2.0 TFSI with 190hp and a 3.0 TDI with 286hp will be coming down the line too.
As you'd expect the engines are more frugal (up to 22pc, they say) and 17pc more powerful.
There is also a 3.0 TFSI 6cyl (354hp) which should be quite something (0 to 100kmh in 5.1 seconds). It has quattro full-time all-wheel drive and an 8spd Tiptronic transmission as standard.
There is a choice on all the engines of having a 6spd manual, 7spd S tronic dual-clutch or the 8spd Tiptronic. Front-wheel-drive is standard but quattro is an option.
