Budget fear undermines car industry
THESE have been among the busiest few days for new cars so far this year.
As you can see from this edition, they are coming in all shapes and sizes.
On the one hand, that is good news for anyone thinking of buying.
On the other, there is such a high level of uncertainty about what is going to be 'done' to motoring in the Budget that many people may be frightened off.
It is not a nice time for those who bring in and sell cars either.
They are effectively gambling on the market not reducing by too much.
Trying to conduct business in such an uncertain climate undermines buyer and seller.
The Government should have made clear its intentions on new emissions/road tax plans much earlier in the year.
It should have given commitments on policy so that all concerned know where they stand. As it is, anything could crop up to skew the entire business profile for next year.
Let's hope they see sense and not try to extract too much more from buyers and sellers reeling from the effects of the recession.
