BMW's new 6-series preaches to the converted
THIS is BMW's stunning new 6-series convertible. The large luxury 2+2-seater goes on sale next year.
There will be two engines: a 407bhp eight-cylinder 650i (0-100kmh in five secs, top speed electronically limited to 250 kmh, 249g/km) and a straight six twinpower turbo pumping 320bhp (0-100kmh in 5.7 seconds, limited top speed 250kmh, emissions 185g/km).
Both have eight-speed sports automatic gearboxes and auto start-stop. Drive dynamic control, which allows you to choose your own suspension settings, is standard.
There's a massive array of stuff available, including rearview camera, surround view, BMW night vision with pedestrian recognition and BMW parking assistant.
Sat nav, phone and entertainment are all worked through the fitted iDrive control system. This is now a freestanding display monitor -- a first.
You can upgrade the standard seven-inch screen to 10.2-inch monitor.
The soft-top roof with 'fin' architecture closes and opens electrically (19 seconds to open, 24 to close at speeds of up to 40kmh). BMW claims the multi-layered roof is cosy even in winter.
The heated glass rear window can be lowered separately from the roof.
At 4,894mm long the convertible is 74mm longer, 39mm wider but 9mm lower and has a wheelbase of 2,855mm.
There is 300 litres of boot space with the roof open. BMW calculate that means it will fit two 46-inch golf bags and a business case.
Among the comfort features are two-zone automatic climate control with convertible mode, hi-fi system with CD player and AUX-IN socket, multi-function steering wheel and the new generation head-up display.
