BMW takes the wraps off its latest range of high-performance vehicles
BMW took the wraps off its range of luxury and high-performance vehicles at a press open day in the grounds of Rosedale House in south Dublin on Monday last.
Among the range was the 3 series touring, the 320d and the face-lifted 7-series.
BMW expects the 3 series to lead its sales charge in January. And it is has introduced a number of updated finance packages on selected vehicles.
But the star of Monday's show was undoubtedly the formidable Gran Coupe which comes with a price tag in excess of €120,000.
Monday's event coincided this week with the launch of the BMW Driver Training Programme which will be operated on its behalf by Rally School Ireland at its state-of-the-art facility near Monaghan town.
The school will provide specific programmes of instruction for groups and individuals, in a controlled environment on its dedicated track, in a wide range of key driving skills including winter driving, collision avoidance and a programme on adapted vehicles for those with disabilities.
The school will also provide instruction in high-performance driving in the BMW M3 Coupe.
It is also targeting companies with a range of corporate incentive packages.
Further information is available from the school on 047-89098.
Not surprisingly, the 6 Series Gran Coupe attracted much, if not most, of the attention at the event. Naturally, it wasn't possible within the time constraints of a short test drive to give full vent to the car's undeniable pent-up energy in the traffic-clogged environs of Shankill in Dublin.
Even an unusually quiet stretch of the M50 -- and the threat of skulking speed cameras -- was insufficient to give complete rein to the coupe's full capability.
With its substantial proportions, which marry style with more than a hint of racy aggression, it's more a beast that would be at home on the German autobahn or posing in Puerto Banus, Monte Carlo, or any of the other haunts of the recession-proof rich and famous.
Notwithstanding the obvious allure, if not somewhat tamer, of the other models driven on a revealing afternoon, the highlight was popping the aptly-named Gran Coupe into drive, settling back into its luxurious leather-clad interior packed with the latest hi-tech creature comforts and feeling like king of the road.
