IT isn't often that an 88-year-old car gets to register for a free breakdown scheme.

Yet that is what has happened in the case of the 1925 Ford Model T owned by William Cuddy as it qualifies for extensive benefits after being serviced at a Ford dealership

It is the oldest vehicle in Ireland to join Ford's free breakdown plan.

William is secretary of the Irish Model T Club and describes the Model T as the Mondeo of its day.

And he attributes the top grade steel that went into it as the reason there are so many still running.

"They were definitely built to last. Having said that, they do need the occasional loving care of a trained Ford technician and it is great to have the reassurance of breakdown assistance."

Between 1909 and 1927 more than 15 million Model Ts were produced. This Model T was made at the Henry Ford & Son factory at the Marina in Cork where around 10,000 were built between 1922 and 1927.
