333 is the magic number Audi has given Spyder
It has been a year since the R8 GT Coupe was unveiled and now comes Audi's new Spyder version of its ultimate supercar. But there will be just 333 examples -- like the coupe -- of the mid-engined Spyder.
The new motor will be 85kg lighter than a standard R8 V10 model (the GT Spyder weighs 1,640kg) thanks to a series of carbon-fibre reinforced polymer parts (side panels, bumpers and new rear spoiler) and modifications to shed weight from the transmission, wheels, brakes and interior. The bucket seats alone account for more than a third of the weight saving.
Into the GT goes Audi's 5.2-litre direct injection V10 with a mere 552bhp awaiting your pleasure (up from 518bhp). That means you get to 100kmh in 3.8 seconds and hit a top speed of nearly 320kmh.
Standard is the company's R-tronic, six-speed automatic gearbox and, needless to remark, so is the Quattro all-wheel drive as well as 19in wheels and ceramic brake discs.
