“There’s a dog in the garden,” said my wife. She’d just opened the blind of the living room window early on a wet, miserable Wexford morning in late September 2019.

I took a look for myself. Sure enough, a black-and-white shape was curled up near the front wall, trying to sleep on soaking wet grass. There’d been a lousy storm the night before and the rain was still falling in spits.
