Laughter is the best medicine. So is a party in a trendy private club. One of Ireland's top doctors John Crown knows a lot about medicine, and a bit about laughter. He walked into Residence on St Stephen's Green last Friday night only to discover that his beautiful wife Orla and his beautiful daughter Mia had thrown a surprise birthday party to celebrate his 60th year. He doesn't look his age, does he? When John first saw his birth cert, he joked to me, he felt it was one of those moments when he thought PwC had given him the wrong envelope. You see - I told you he knew a bit about laughter.
There were 50 family, friends and colleagues from far and wide (one even coming from as far as Canada to wish John all the best) at Residence.
In terms of turning 60, John, one of the nation's foremost oncologists, told me on the more serious note of the issue of compulsory retirement and Ireland. "How many things are wrong with this sentence: 'A cash-strapped republic forces competent, able-bodied people who want to continue working at a time when it is hard to replace their skills?'" said John, who tied the knot to his beloved Orla in the Cote D'Azur in 2014.
It's all go in the posh principality of Howth next weekend.
And I don't just mean the Prawn Festival which is expected to bring 50,000 to the peninsula.
Kate Gleeson, who lives in Howth, and for two decades had the Diffusion fashion emporium in Clontarf, is 'popping up' in Howth with her fabulous fashions at 1 Island View opposite the Yacht Club and next door to that well-known establishment, Il Panorama.
Once upon a time, many moons ago, I spent many a night at the aforesaid Il Panorama with Howth-based solicitor supreme Peter Lennon - and the redoubtable husband of Kate.
She took a break from the fashion business four years ago and returned to great acclaim with the internet portal diffusion.ie and has also been 'popping up' in various locations in Dublin over the last year.
"It's great to be back," Kate enthused.
She is just back from a work trip to New York Fashion Week, too, where she told me that, "the Pop Up/online business is booming".
See you in classy Howth next weekend where the champagne corks will doubtless be popping too.
I Dreamt I Dwelt in Marble Halls, or, in this case, Marbs. But, then, don't most of us?
Perhaps not as much as we did back in the boom, when Marbs was the de rigeur hotspot in southern Spain for the Irish high-fliers (Michael and Norma Smurfit, Albert and Kathleen Reynolds, Bill and Jackie, Bertie Ahern and Anna Bogle - remember her?), who frequented Marc Quinlan's restaurant Beckett's.
Dubliner Marc (pictured) opened Alevante, in Marbella port, last month and film star Dolph Lundgren has already popped in for dinner.
On St Patrick's Day, Marc will open the Alevante Playa, a beach club for the hopelessly hip. I'll pack a bottle of Factor 50 and get on the next plane.
It's official. The property market is back. But not in Dublin. In Bangkok. How do I know this? Because Carol Anthony told me.
The ravishing brunette girlfriend of Liverpool FC hero Ian Rush has just returned from a swish sojourn with her other half where she mixed business with pleasure in Thailand.
"I just bought my first property there - two apartments. I am renting them out, which is great. I am letting them out for a while to two foreign bankers," Cork-born Carol told your diarist, adding that property in Bangkok is "very, very strong at the moment".
She said: "I'm delighted to have expanded my property portfolio to Asia. It's hopefully the start of many more... Bangkok has lots to offer in terms of secure investment property wise.. It's the right time to buy! They were a special deal, I managed to bid for 200k sterling but currently the market price shows three times that." So, as Ian Rush might say, a result.
Carol and Ian are jetting to Geneva this week, again for business and pleasure.
Ian is working for UEFA in Switzerland and while they are there they will work in, so to speak, a touch of R'n'R, and in grand style, too, as they will be flying into Geneva for St Patrick's Day on a private jet.
The happy couple will taking public transport - aka Aer Lingus - to Dublin on March 24 for the big football match at the Aviva: Rush's beloved Wales v Carol's Ireland.
Divided loyalties, or what?
Not only is there no God, (to quote Woody Allen) but try finding a plumber on Sunday. It is actually much easier to find a star in Lillie's Bordello on a Sunday night than it is to find a person who fits and repairs the pipes.
Take last Sunday... Conor McGregor went into the famous nightclub on Grafton Street with a group of pals.
Katherine Lynch was also in that night, directly after being voted off - sadly in my opinion - RTE's Dancing With The Stars. Chatty Kathy was accompanied by the show's sequinned superstar James Patrice.
TV3's Red Rock stars David Crowley and Stephen Jones were also in Lillie's last weekend.
