The eighth century Irish scholar Clement was famous enough in his own time to have a biography written. The author is said to have been a monk named Notker the Stammerer, and the work was dedicated to Charles the Fat.
Clement overcame these less than august-sounding associations and became a perfectly dignified saint in due course, giving his name to St Clement's Road, a redbrick terrace in Drumcondra, Dublin 9.
