Old Grange a lesson in how to do cottage refurbishment in Skerries
The Old Grange, Skerries €510,000
For years, children mastered (or failed to master) their Three Rs at The Old Grange national school in the townland of Balcunnin, near Skerries, Co Dublin.
In 1903, the school, its pupils and its teacher moved to their new premises half-a-kilometre up the road to Scoil Moibhi, where it remains to this day.
The Old Grange school still stands too, although its character has changed quite a lot since the days when its rooms were full of children rehearsing their times tables.
In the year 2000, the cottage got a complete refurbishment, although it still has authentic features, including dual and triple-aspect rooms, high ceilings, and a mix of flagstone and pitch-pine floors. The sun still pours through its south-facing windows, as it must have once poured torment on the passive recipients of late 19th-century education.
The front door opens to a hallway along the front (northern) elevation and there are three bedrooms (one ensuite) and a bathroom to the right here. A fourth bedroom, dual aspect, lies to the left at the corner of the house, and has a cast-iron fireplace.
Straight ahead (more or less) is the kitchen, where there are cream coloured units and an oil-fired range in red, as well as a cast-iron fireplace. A large skylight brightens the room and the floor is limestone flags.
Glass double doors in the kitchen lead through to a dual-aspect living room at the back of the house on the southern elevation. This room has a solid-fuel stove and there are French doors on the western wall opening to the patio.
The internal floor space is 1,331 sq ft and the site amounts to a third of an acre with old stone walls, flower beds, a lawn and mature trees. Skerries is four kilometres away.
The Old Grange is for sale for €510,000 with Kelly & Co (01) 849 1155.
