The new home view: Within commuting distance
Eight three and four-bed detached and semis currently available at Wicklow town development
A few decades after the Vikings landed in Ireland in the late 8th century and set about plundering settlements and monasteries, they established a base in Wicklow town to take advantage of its natural harbour. The Norse settlers called their new home Víkingalág or Wykynlo, which roughly translates as "the Vikings' meadow".
This heritage is recalled in The Meadows, the name of a new development just 100 yards from the town's Main Street, which runs parallel to the harbour and a fine stone beach. The new estate will have 71 three and four-bed semi-detached and detached homes, with five house designs.
Throughout the centuries, Wicklow town has been the subject of many an invasion and settlement. But these days it is attracting settlers with a more benign intent - house-hunters keen to secure more bang for their buck within commuting distance of Dublin.
Indeed, commuters have accounted for much of the interest at The Meadows, which is a 42km drive to the capital. Demand for such schemes can be seen in the multitude of neighbouring developments built off Marlton Road by Redmond Homes.
The latest addition to Marlton Road saw a showhouse open there at the end of June. There are currently eight homes for sale at The Meadows, though the builder will be continually on site rather than releasing properties through a series of phases.
The exteriors of the block-built houses have a contemporary twist to the roof over the balcony that leads out from the master en-suite on the first floor There is parking in the drive out front and the rear garden with treated timber panels can be accessed via a concrete footpath around the house or through the double doors that open out from the dining area.
The kitchen is in a shaker style, with soft-close doors and drawers, as are the custom-built bedroom wardrobes. The bathrooms are tiled wet areas and are fitted with Casabella sanitary ware.
Each home comes with an A energy rating, courtesy of triple-glazed windows and an air-to-water heat pump that provides cost-effective heat.
Prices at The Meadows start at €299,000 for a three-bed semi-detached home, which, at 1,227 sq ft, is the same size as many four-bed semis on the market. The four-bed semi is 1,485 sq ft and costs from €339,000, while the detached version, which is the same size, is selling for €370,000.
Viewings at The Meadows will take place tomorrow and Sunday, from 2pm to 4pm, and at the same time the following weekend.
