For decades, the sod peat from Derryounce Bog outside Portarlington was used by Bord na Móna to supply an old power station in the Laois town.

Now there is an artificial lake, Derryounce Lake, which was created by digging down to the sand layer below the peat. Some of this sand was deposited at the edge of the lake, forming an inland 'beach' that's popular during warm summer weather.

The Derryounce lakes and trails serve as the backdrop for a new residential development of the same name in the area. Derryounce is aimed at local families, commuters and retirees, according to the selling agent.

A phase of six houses was released at the 37-home scheme at the start of this month. Prices start at €220,000 for the three-bed semi-detached Holly house type, with the detached version of the Holly priced from €235,000. Both versions have an integrated car port.

The Katherine (above), a large three-bed detached design, is selling for €255,000, while the four-bed detached Laura style is priced from €265,000.

The prices for the A3-rated houses include a kitchen, flooring, bathroom fit-out and internal painting, while the price for the Katherine style also includes tiling, furnishings and furniture. An air-to-water heat pump provides the heating for the homes.

For commuters from Derryounce, there are normally 35 trains a day from Portarlington to Heuston Station.
