The Crittall-style windows between the hall and the dining area ensure that there is plenty of light throughout. The floor at ground level is tiled and the whole area is toasty as there is underfloor heating. The dining table, made by Precision Joinery, is from Tiffany’s former home and the couple bought the wishbone chairs online. Photo: Tony Gavin.

The enclosed staircase designed by Matty is a feature in itself with its ramrod straight black stringers. The lighting is part of the Lutron system which is all worked remotely — no switches necessary. Photo: Tony Gavin.

Matty and Tiffany Rea’s stunning new home is full of interesting details. There are some standout ones, such as the toasted-wood exterior, the staircase with its black stringers, the grey sanitaryware in the bathroom and the black kitchen units, and other more subtle features, such as the lighting system and the skirting boards being the same colour as the walls.

Intriguingly, it was Matty who insisted that the skirting boards and walls be painted the same. “I’ve lots of things I feel strongly about and that’s one of them,” Matty explains with a laugh, while Tiffany adds jokingly: “You wouldn’t think a man who plays rugby professionally would have an issue with skirting boards but he has.”
