My Favourite Room: A stunning period home in Co Waterford with plenty to inspire its artist owner Andrea Jameson

Andrea Jameson and her sisters — all three of them artists — grew up in a period house with a walled garden on the Blackwater where there’s no shortage of inspiration for their work

Artist Andrea Jameson outisde her magnificent home, Tourin, on the banks of the river Blackwater in Cappoquin, Co Waterford. The house, which is on 360 acres, was built in 1840 by her ancestors the Musgraves, and was completely restored by her parents in the 1950s. Andrea and her sisters decided to paint the exterior a soft ochre 15 years ago. The three red setters belong to her sister Kristin, who trains them. Andrea’s own dog, Sandy, is off to the side. Andrea’s paintings hang on the walls of the elegant sitting room. Her mother, Didi, found the Irish weather very damp, so when she came to Tourin she brought a log-burning stove and had it installed in the marble fireplace in the living room. Photo: Tony Gavin

“The original dwelling place was the Tower House, built in 1560. There was a series of those tower houses strategically built, from the sea in Youghal right inland, to signal to each other if there was trouble on the river. Our family, the Musgraves, bought it in the 1780s and they built a house onto it." Photo: Tony Gavin

‘To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow,” said the talented and wise Audrey Hepburn and now, more than ever, we need to believe in the future.

A more literary person, the Roman philosopher Cicero said, “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need”.
