Believe it or not, one of the top interiors trends for 2022 is not a colour or a cushion or a throw. It is, according to the American Society of Interior Designers, health and wellness.
If you’re in the market for a new home, you might be aware that the latest property developments are being built with wellness in mind. Where once the idea of a few dumb-bells and a rowing machine were considered a home gym, now if it doesn’t have a spa, a steam room, a pool and a fitness metaverse, it’s not going to cut it. It’s a nice idea, but not one we’ll see in Irish developments for a while.
However, the trend for health and wellness at home is huge, and you can probably thank the pandemic for it. The last two years have been tough on our mental health and working from home has brought a new level of stress into the spaces that used to be our escape.
The good news is you don’t need access to luxury developments and pricey fitness studios to bring wellness into your home. It can be something as small as a dedicated space, a comfortable chair in a peaceful, sunny spot that you use to meditate in every day, or a dedicated screen-free room.
Something as small as introducing a misting diffuser with your favourite essential oil into your home can soothe your senses and your frayed nerves. Even better, if you have a signifier scent that connects you to home, your olfactory nerve will tell your brain: ‘You’re home, it’s time to relax’, the minute you cross the threshold.

A lot of luxury brands likeDiptyque and Neom now offer these misters but you can pick one up inexpensively in your local health store too.
The key word is relaxation. Is there space for a swinging suspended egg chair or a hammock in your outdoor space? Or a little Zen garden with a water feature? If you have a spot, make the most of it and soak up that vitamin D.
Remember, fresh air flowing through a space will always make you feel better. If you can’t afford to invest in an air-exchange system, open the windows at least once a day.
