When life gives you lemons, make your home zing with citrus accessories and pops of colour
Imagine a sun-drenched terrace that overlooks a sparkling azure sea, a terrace fringed by lemon trees and olive groves stirred by breezes that brush the shores of the Italian Riviera. If ever there was a time for lemon-themed accessories, it’s in August when Italians and tourists vacate their cities for the coast. In Italy, the significance of lemons is brighter than their vibrant colour.
Walk through different towns and cities and you’ll see beautiful vases and pots painted with lemons, bottles of limoncello and roadside stands brimming with them; they’re an essential part of Italian life, the Amalfi Coast claiming to be the home of the true lemon. In Italy, they’ve never gone out of fashion and their popularity is catching.
The lemon print trend has been spotted all over the High Street and at designers including Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta. They’ve been adorning, embellishing and splashing themselves over our homes adding a much-needed pop of brightness and a zest for life, not to mention them being a symbol for love and friendship and, a key component in a gin and tonic.
Yellow interiors can often lean towards a ‘magnolia’ home. But when Pantone picked Illuminating Yellow as one of its key colours for 2021 it brought a new appreciation for uplifting shades of the colour that pack a punch when applied graphically in small doses.
It’s a trend that reflects our gravitation towards shades that offer nostalgia and warmth and nothing says sunshine more than a bright citrusy object to help bring home a little of the Med we’re all dreaming of.
We love &Klevering’s graphic pitcher — a kitsch interpretation of a still-life lemon painting, available from April and the Bear.
Suzie McAdam is known for her playful and cross-genre style and her online shop bears the hallmarks with a collection that flirts with French and Italian frivolity including Les-Ottoman’s lemon bowls and plates that will instantly transport you to balmy Sicilian summers.
On a trip to Westport last year, I was drawn to an enormous and beautiful vase in the window of interiors boutique Townhouse Westport adorned with bright lemons. Owner Ally Murphy has a knack for finding and curating quirky, unique and often kitsch-cool pieces that riff on fruit, flora and fauna. If you want to make a splash at your next dinner party consider investing in The Designed Table’s lemon-motif tablecloth and placemats, which pair beautifully with amber glassware.
Add a fresh squeeze of lemon to the table with Avoca’s blue and white plates with leafy lemon illustrations or a lemon-shaped bowl from Tiger.
A pop of vivid lemon ink jumps out on a wall. For a classic piece try Townhouse Westport’s botanical lemon illustration or for a modern twist Desenio’s graphic dotted lemon poster.

Now pour yourself a G&T and linger under those imaginary lemon groves.
