Things to do this week

n Seems strange to be thinking about winter but around now is the time when you sow seeds for two of the stalwarts of the winter garden: brussels sprouts and purple sprouting broccoli (PSB).

Both plants will produce lots of food at a time when there is very little else cropping.

If you could get four or five good plants of each going, you will have no shortage of healthy greens from November to April of next year, with sprouts coming first followed by PSB in spring.

Sprouts can be sown now.

PSB is best sown in late May – any earlier and the plants may start producing before Christmas.

Sow in module trays – one seed per module about 2cm deep. They will be ready for transplanting about four or five weeks later.
