Take Four

What: Three-bedroom Victorian gate lodge Where: Eaton Brae Lodge, Corbawn Lane, Shankill, Co Dublin

Built around 1860, Eaton Brae Lodge is a pretty Victorian gate lodge situated on Corbawn Lane in Shankill, Co Dublin.

The three-bedroom cottage extends to 86.6sqm (932sq ft) in size and is brimming with character.

The property retains many of its original features such as granite window sills, original doors and windows, and the original Victorian fireplace in the living room. It is BER exempt.

The cottage was extended in 1987 and the owners took great care to integrate new and old by incorporating items salvaged from another Victorian property that was being demolished in the area. These salvaged items include the cast-iron bath, pull-chain toilet and sink in the bathroom.

The main accommodation is comprised of an open-plan kitchen/family room, a living room, three bedrooms and a bathroom.

Visitors cross the threshold through the old arched front doors into the porch, which features the original mosaic tiled floor. The cottage is decorated in neutral colours throughout, with splashes of colour provided by the windows and the soft furnishings. The interior feels surprisingly spacious, courtesy of its high ceilings and light flooding in through windows.

Eaton Brae Lodge has a pathway leading to the front door, with a large private west-facing lawn area to one side and vehicular access to the other side. There is also a rear garden that can be accessed from both sides of the house and includes a Barna shed.

The property is a two-minute walk from the beach at Shankill, five minutes from the DART and a short drive from the Luas at Cherrywood.
