Three bedroom house

THEY haven't seen any Norman knights on the Little Sugar Loaf in Co Wicklow, recently, but residents know what to do if one comes riding up looking for the rent.

This little brother to the famous Great Sugar Loaf was once known as Giltspur Mountain. The name goes back to the 12th Century, when the local Irish chieftain leased land to the Norman Richard de Felda for the rent of a pair of gilt spurs, to be presented to him and his heirs each year at Michelmas.

Barnaculla, one of the secluded houses tucked among the trees on the Little Sugar Loaf, is for sale. There can be very few properties so much in a natural setting and yet so near to the city and its transport network.

The house is on Bohilla Lane, which snakes its way up the hill. It is just a two-minute drive to the N11, and 15-minute walk to the bus terminus for the 145 and 133 to Dublin city centre and airport, yet hardly another house is visible from the substantial garden of Barnaculla.

Instead, there are stunning views of the Great Sugar Loaf on one side, and leafy pathways to the peak of the hill on the other, where the view stretches all the way to the Mourne Mountains on a clear day. Encounters with wild deer, badgers and kestrels are everyday events.

Barnaculla is ideal for anyone wishing to have the rural lifestyle without the isolation. The entrance is into the hall of the original old cottage which stood on the site and retains the cosy feel.

But the house has been greatly extended, with a large (8.19 x 3.66m) open plan kitchen to one side, and an even larger family living room on the other.

This includes a natural fuel stove; a picture window looking on to the incredible view; and a wooden patio for enjoying the outdoors when the weather is right.

There is one substantial bedroom off the entrance hall and two more bedrooms downstairs, with bathrooms on both levels.

The present owners, Neil and Sylvia Keenan, have installed a spiral staircase to create an office space or play area above the hall, while Sylvia, an artist, has built a studio in the garden, which also has sheds for extra storage space.
