Though most of it was built in 1773, Rathcoursey House, near Midleton in Co Cork, spans four centuries, at least according to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage.

A plaque on the wall reads: "This house was built by James Tynte Smyth Earl of Rathcoursey Anno Domini 1773", but part of the house is much older, dating from 1640, and another wing was added in 1830.

Rathcoursey is a fine old listed Georgian country house on around 31 acres of land in a beautiful spot overlooking the East Ferry inlet and Great Island.

The previous owner, chef and gardener Beth Hallinan, bought the place in 1998 and refurbished it, including planting thousands of native hardwood trees on the grounds. She then ran it as a guesthouse - apparently quite successfully, with royal and diplomatic visitors - so that it might make a contribution to the cost of its own upkeep.

The house itself is a rambling 4,413 sq ft, with six bedrooms, six bathrooms, and several reception rooms in which you can swan about indulging your taste for 18th-century pursuits.

There's a drawing room, a dining room, a library and a study, all with fireplaces, as well as a garden room with French doors to a terrace outside. The kitchen has a quarry-tiled floor and a pantry and boot room off, and there's also a sauna on the ground floor.

The six bedrooms are all upstairs, accompanied by four en-suites or otherwise nearby bathrooms, and there's an office in the attic.

The house is at the end of a long avenue through woodland, and around the curtilage is a walled orchard with bee boles and a nearby duck pond, and there's a complicated yard of outbuildings including stables, a forge and a lime kiln.

It's on the market for €1.5m with Michael H Daniels & Co in Fermoy (025) 31023.
