Five-bedroom period detached home

A house once owned by the British Prime Minister who negotiated the peace treaty with George Washington's American rebels is for sale near Tullamore, Co Offaly.

Rahan Lodge, Killina, Tullamore is a Georgian-style country home with four reception rooms and six bedrooms, standing on 17.2 acres.

It was built around 1740 by Henry Petty, Earl of Shelburne, on a site of an old castle and the estate was passed on to his nephew John FitzMaurice and in turn to his son the Marquis of Lansdowne, William Petty, who then became known as The Earl of Shelburne.

Petty later became the first Home Secretary in Britain and later Prime Minister. As Earl of Shelburne, he was instrumental in negotiating peace in Paris with American commissioners, which eventually led to the independence of America.

In 1803 the family sold Rahan to Denis O'Brien, a Dublin merchant. He passed it on to his daughter Maria who set up a local school in Killina in 1812.

Rahan Lodge comes to the market as a comfortable and stylish family home with some fine reception rooms for entertaining.

Well-maintained over the years, it retains many of the original features.

The asking price is €650,000.

Inside it is bright and spacious, with a floor area of 4,833 sq ft. There are ceiling cornices, central rose and polished timber flooring in the hall and all four reception rooms. These rooms comprise a dining room, drawing room, family room and study, all of which have marble chimney pieces.

The stair hall features a carved timber staircase to the first floor, with a return to a mezzanine floor which accommodates a linen room and small bedroom.

The master bedroom on the first floor has a polished timber floor, ceiling cornice and cast iron fireplace. A further four bedrooms complete the sleeping accommodations and are serviced by two bathrooms and a shower room.

While the current arrangement does not incorporate en suite bedrooms, the agent point out that this floor could easily be rearranged to provide four large bedrooms suites.

The lower ground floor opens out at ground level to a breakfast terrace.

A large traditional kitchen features an AGA cooking range and a breakfast counter, and is complemented by an adjoining breakfast room and a separate pantry with wine cellar.

A laundry, boiler room and shower room complete the accommodation.

Outside there are two stables and the good grazing land is in pasture.

It is located 9km from the town of Tullamore.
