Modern comforts and old charm at chocolate-box cottage in Kildare
Spinning Wheel Cottage, Rathangan €255k
Ordnance survey maps from the 19th century show a cottage in the townland of Clonsast Lower, Co Kildare, as 'Spinning Wheel'.
It's reported that the cottage remained in the same family from when it was built, in the 1700s, until the 1990s, and that it was something of a meeting place for the locals, being also a shop for a time.
In the hands of its current owners it has had a complete refurbishment, although nostalgia-prone house-hunters will be glad to know that its original features are intact.
It has a thatched roof (redone in 2009), a half-door to keep the chickens out, for you will certainly be needing chickens and a stove in the living room in front of which no one will be able to resist whipping out a tin whistle. There's even a spinning wheel.
There are modern comforts here too though, including en suites in two of the bedrooms, one of which has a Jacuzzi bath.
And for the sake of energy-efficiency, there's a wood-pellet boiler in the garage on the grounds.
It's 1,200 sq ft in size, all on one floor, and has three bedrooms in all.
The kitchen is galley-style, with green-painted cabinets, granite countertops, a Belfast sink and built-in appliances.
The dining room is separate and has a stove with a back-boiler in it.
The second stove is in a brick fireplace in the living room, where there are also French doors to the garden.
Although this cottage has an official postal address in Co Kildare, it's actually just inside the Offaly border, so it's up to you which county to support in the football.
It's about 50 minute' drive from here to the Red Cow roundabout, or you can take a train to Dublin from Portarlington, six kilometres away.
