Marlfield House in Cabinteely, Dublin 18, was once the fine country home of the Right Honourable William Kenny, former MP and Supreme Court Judge and not a wildly popular man in his day, having been a Catholic Unionist.
He's there in the 1911 census with his wife, son, daughter and granddaughter, and together they needed eight servants to minister to them. They also needed a footman, chauffeur, a pantry boy, a cook, two housemaids, a kitchen maid and a nurse.
His son Edward kept Marlfield until his own death in 1944, and the house experienced mixed fortunes after that. Eventually, in the late 1990s, it was acquired by Shannon Homes, who converted it to apartments.
There are 15 apartments in all in the block, and although the residents have to make do without footmen and the like, they do maintain a sinking fund and they have well-maintained grounds and common areas, paying €1,848 a year for the upkeep.
Apartment No2 is on the lower ground floor, reached by stairs or a high-speed lift, and it measures 1,237 sq ft in all - the same size as or bigger than many family houses in the city.
The space includes two bedrooms to one side of the entrance hall, one of them having an ensuite shower. The main bathroom has a bath with an overhead shower.
To the left then is the impressive main room of the house - the open-plan living room, dining room and kitchen. This room has a gas-fitted fireplace and three sash windows in a bay overlooking the garden. The kitchen at the opposite end of the room has a tiled floor and integrated appliances.
Marlfield House is part of the St Gabriel's estate off Johnstown Road, two minutes' drive from the N11. No2 is for sale for €450,000 with Janet Carroll (087) 400 2020.
