King of the castles in Wexford comes with palatial floor plan
Alanya, Coolree, Co Wexford €795k
The most famous landmark of Alanya in Turkey is the castle that gave the Mediterranean resort city its name. Alanya Castle is a 13th-century fortress surrounded by six kms of walls, and it is on a list for inclusion among Unesco World Heritage sites.
Alanya's namesake in Wexford is a much more recent arrival, occupying two acres of the townland of Coolree, four kms from Wexford town. And while the Wexford Alanya doesn't quite rival the Turkish one in size, it does make a fair stab at citadel-type proportions.
Alanya measures 4,500 sq ft - a size something of the order of two tennis courts, if you were to lay it all out on one level and throw up a couple of nets.
Wexford county council's planners gave careful consideration to the scale of the house when the planning application was made back in 2005. But thanks to a complicated footprint and varied rooflines, Alanya is not that domineering a structure on the landscape. Most of the accommodation is on the ground floor, the first floor having three bedrooms. Two of these have ensuites and the main bedroom also has a walk-in wardrobe.
There are two ensuite bedrooms off the entrance hall where there's a striking curved staircase in oak.
This end of the house also has a gym and an office. The other side of the entrance hall, then, is all given over to reception rooms.
Directly to the right is a dual-aspect sitting room with a marble fireplace. A short flight up steps leads from the hall up to the oak-fitted kitchen, and three more steps go from there to the dining room, where there are patio doors. Off the dining room, there's both a sitting room and a sunroom, the latter with doors to a huge, decked balcony.
Alanya is for sale for €795,000 with Sherry FitzGerald Radford (051) 426 161.
