'I GIY in the front garden'
Aaron Jay is a photographer and programmer. Originally from Tennessee, USA, he moved to Ireland 13 years ago to marry an Irish woman. Aaron dug up his lawn, put in raised beds and added a polytunnel over the last five years. As an avid GIYer, he hopes his gardening passion will be instilled in his two children.
Where do you GIY?
In the front garden, much to my wife's dismay.
Why do you GIY?
Initially, it was to have the kids know where their food came from, but it has become more than that. It is decompression from the technical work I do daily and very satisfying manual labour in the outdoors.
What do you grow?
The usual suspects: potatoes, onions, asparagus, beans, tonnes of brassicas, spinach, pumpkins, squash, tomatoes, peas, garlic.
Your favourite veg to eat / grow
My asparagus bed was finally ready this year, which was tasty! And nothing compares to home-grown peas.
Your least favourite veg to eat /grow
Can't bear the sight or smell of beetroot, even though it is easy to grow.
Your favourite GIYing moment each year (and why)
The anticipation of seedlings coming up in the greenhouse is always a nice time.
Your most useful gardening tool (and why)
A chillington fork/hoe, saves the back.
What do you know now about GIYing that you didn't know last year?
That with a greenhouse in place this year for the first time, it is quite manageable to keep a steady stream of seedlings ready for planting out. Things grow well and consistently in there.
My finest hour in the veg patch was when ...
I got to harvest asparagus fresh and eat them fresh with my own hen's eggs 10 minutes later.
Which 'Good Life' cast member are you? Tom, Barbara, Jerry or Margot?
Dunno, we didn't have that show in America when I grew up.
