Growing a castle in Newcastle
Athgoe South, €985k
Athgoe Castle, near Newcastle in Co Dublin, was built in 1579 by the Locke family. About 200 years later, the castle having outlived its usefulness, Athgoe Park was built right next to it - a late 18th-century country house that still stands next to the picturesque ruin of the mediaeval towerhouse.
About 300 metres from Athgoe Castle is another property that's been changed and added to as the need arose. This detached house has acquired a complicated structure over the years, with several different rooflines and a vast internal floor area of 5,231 sq ft on various levels.
At entrance level there's a large hall and one big dual-aspect reception room measuring 31ft by 14ft. This room has a brick fireplace and doors to the rear patio, and it communicates with an L-shaped kitchen and sunroom at the back of the house.
The kitchen has a breakfast bar dividing the cooking area from the dining area, and there's a patio door here as well, and another in the adjoining sunroom.
From a back hall on this level you can get to the skylit master bedroom upstairs, where there's an en-suite with a bath and separate shower. Another bedroom on this floor is used as a home office, and then there are four more bedroom on the ground floor, with one en-suite.
The second upper level has another bedroom (the sixth) and a sitting room, while on the lower level there's a garage that's been turned into a games room, as well as a workshop and utility room.
It's on three-quarters of an acre of grounds including a double garage and a compost area. There's both a patio and a deck including an outdoor fireplace, and elsewhere the garden has lawns with stepping stones and mature trees. It's about a 20-minute drive from Dublin city.
