Four on the market: thatched houses
If you like the idea of living in a thatched house, then here are four such properties on the market.
The Old Forge, Okyle, Co Waterford
€190k Sherry FitzGerald Reynolds, (058) 23444
Sure enough, The Old Forge near Cappoquin is marked as a smithy on the second edition (1904) Ordnance Survey map. It's been restored by the current owner and has period features including a huge hearth in the lounge. The lounge is right inside the front door, and to the left is a living room, with the master bedroom off it. The other side of the house has the kitchen, bathroom and two more bedrooms, for a total floor area of 1,100 sq ft. It's on 1.55 acres with a cottage-style garden and some mature trees as well as a big lawn. The nearest town is Lismore, about eight kilometres away.
Jacob’s Cottage, Co Donegal
€225k Franklins, (074) 918 8000
Jacob's Cottage in Lettermacaward began as a small, traditional thatched cottage but has been extended with a Scandinavian-style log cabin which is also thatched. The extension added three extra rooms so that the cottage as a whole now has an open-plan kitchen and living room, a conservatory and three bedrooms. There's also a wooden summerhouse on the half-acre grounds which has a kitchen and living room and one bedroom. There are non-stop views of Trawena Bay from the property and a deck with a hot tub from which to enjoy them. Dungloe is 10 kilometres away.
Rose Cottage, Co Wicklow
€635k Keary Estates, (01) 668 8961
Rose Cottage in Upper Windgates fronts onto the R761, which is the 'coast road' between Bray and Greystones. This will be convenient for getting to work and home, but if it's seclusion you're after you'll be glad of the cottage's back garden which is rustic, with lawn, mature trees and an orchard. Another option is to abandon the commute and work from Rose Cottage, as it comes with various outbuildings alongside and out the back. The cottage itself is 901 sq ft with three bedrooms (one a single), a living room and a kitchen-diner. You could annex one of the outbuildings if you want more living space.
Geeha, Doorus, Kinvara, Co Galway
€175k DNG Brian MacMahon, (091) 638 638
This is one of a pair of traditional thatched cottages near the edge of a windy (as the name implies) peninsula north-west of Kinvara, with views of Galway Bay to the north and the hills of the Burren to the south. It's in reasonable condition, the roof having been replaced in 2007, but some refurbishment is needed inside. It's about 1,000 sq ft in size inside, with a living room, kitchen and four bedrooms, and it stands on a quarter of an acre with a shed. A little farther to the west is the causeway to the island of Aughinish, while to the east is Doorus National School and church. Kinvara is a 10-minute drive.
