Four on the market: in Howth
A choice of four properties in the seaside town of Howth.
Heath House, Thormanby Road
€1.5m Sherry FitzGerald Sutton, (01) 839 4022
When it was built, back in the late 19th century, it had rather more space than it does now, having been one of a well separated row of large, elite houses at Thormanby Road. It now has close neighbours either side but there are still long gardens front and back. The house itself is 2,648 sq ft on two floors, with three reception rooms on the ground floor along with a country-style kitchen with an Aga. The first floor has four bedrooms, the main one with an en-suite shower and a walk-in wardrobe. According to the Property Price Register, Heath House last sold in April 2014 for €1.6m.
3 St Lawrence Road
€550k Sherry FitzGerald Sutton, (01) 839 4022
Number 3 St Lawrence Road is still known as 'The Dispensary', for that was indeed what it used to be, at least when the Ordnance Survey people came by in 1907 to map the area. It's a cute, red-brick detached house just off Howth's main street and five minutes' walk from the pier. It measures 990 sq ft but manages to squeeze three bedrooms into that space, along with an open-plan kitchen and dining room and a splendidly dilapidated drawing room with a high ceiling, original fireplace and wood floor. There's off-street parking out the front and out the back is a herringbone-paved patio.
18 Abbey Street
€740k JB Kelly, (01) 839 3402
According to the national Inventory of Architectural Heritage, 18 Abbey Street was built around 1850, part of a terrace facing west and only a couple of hundred metres from the harbour. It was renovated in 2004 and extended at the same time, so that it's now quite a lot bigger than it looks from the front, at 1,991 sq ft. That includes four bedrooms on the first floor (with one en-suite) and a bathroom on the return. The ground floor has an open-plan kitchen and dining room (two rooms knocked through) as well as a living room, study and playroom. Out the back is a flight of steps up to a raised garden, while the front garden has been made over to parking.
Deerpark Lodge, Howth Road
€1.295m Gallagher Quigley, (01) 818 3000
You're spoilt for amenities at Deerpark Lodge. Behind the house is Corr Castle, if you fancy poking around the ruins of a mediaeval towerhouse. Next to that is Deerpark Golf Course and Howth Castle itself. Best of all, the Hole in the Wall Beach is across the road to the north. The property has amenities of its own too, as it's on a third of an acre with a well-sheltered lawned garden out the back. It's detached and 2,750 sq ft in a dormer arrangement, with four upstairs bedrooms (one en-suite). Downstairs there's a bay-windowed lounge, a family room and an eat-in kitchen opening into a conservatory.
