Rathconrath

There is not much in Rathconrath apart from a rather famous spit'n'sawdust pub, Gunning's, complete with olde petrol pumps outside, but that's plenty of character to be going on with. About a kilometre from the pub is this old world-style cottage with the modern convenience of geothermal heating. It has four bedrooms (two en-suite), a living room, and eat-in kitchen, and it's on a half-acre of gardens with a 2.5-acre meadow out the back. The grounds also include a detached garage that might be converted. It's 10 minutes' drive from Mullingar, where there are trains to Dublin, Sligo and Longford.

Windmill Road

Just 100 metres north of this dormer bungalow at Windmill Road is the old Mullingar-Athlone railway line. Now known as the Old Rail Trail, it's been reborn as a 40-kilometre walking and cycling route. Meanwhile, a five-minute walk in an easterly direction will take you to the town centre of Moate. The house measures 1,545 sq ft with two bedrooms at dormer level, with a shared bathroom, and three downstairs. The ground floor also has a front living room with a fireplace and an eat-in kitchen with a solid-fuel stove. There's a detached garage on the grounds as well.

Canal Bank Cottage

Canal Bank Cottage is near Heatherstown (or Riverstown) Bridge and the 22nd lock of the Royal Canal, and as it's right on the canal bank, you can follow the greenway in either direction, heading for either Dublin or Longford. The cottage is said to have been built in 1900 and has traditional features such as a half-door and exposed stone walls, and it has been recently restored. It has three bedrooms (one en-suite) and an open-plan living room and kitchen with separate utility and pantry. It's on three-quarters of an acre with fruit trees, a polytunnel, and a waterside summerhouse.

Creggan House

A mile from the shores of Lough Ree on the Westmeath side is Creggan House, and handily enough it has a west-facing balcony from which to enjoy the view of the lake. That's off the master bedroom upstairs, one of four first-floor bedrooms, which also has a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite. The ground floor has a large kitchen with a centre island, family room and lounge/dining room, in a total floor area of 2,798 sq ft. The grounds include a stone-built garage or boathouse matching the house. Glasson village is six kilometres away, and Athlone town is about 15 minutes' drive.
