Four on the market: in Co Laois
A choice of four very different properties in Laois.
17 Killenard Lodge, Killenard
€395k DNG Kelly (057) 862 3880
Killenard Lodge is a small housing estate just south of the railway tracks and north of Mount St Anne's retreat centre at Killenard, Co Laois. So the residents there have a choice between staying put and meditating or jumping on a train to somewhere else. Number 17 is a detached dormer bungalow of 2,010 sq ft, with five bedrooms (three en-suite), or possibly six, depending on whether you need a study or not. There's also an eat-in kitchen, a dining room with French doors to the patio, and a living room.
Newtown House & Mills, Durrow
€865k Sotheby's International Realty (01) 905 9790
If you want to acquire Newtown House on 1.6 acres of grounds, it will cost €550,000, but another €315,000 will buy you the nearby four-storey mill, mill pond, and 9.4 acres with river frontage. At least you'll stop anyone else from getting their hands on it. The house was reportedly built in 1801, although the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage says 1840. It's on two storeys with a raised basement, and stands at 3,358 sq ft with five bedrooms, a drawing room, dining room, study, along with a big kitchen.
Bushfield House, Knockaroo
€395k Clement Herron (057) 866 6344; Padraig Hyde (024) 91355
Bushfield House reportedly dates from 1850, but it has been extensively renovated and extended, so that it's now a substantial 3,000 sq ft. It still has some authentic features such as high ceilings and the original staircase, and it's on five acres of land. The six bedrooms are all upstairs, and there are four en-suites. On the ground floor there's a country-style kitchen, a living room, family room, study and lounge. It's about six kilometres from Borris-in-Ossory and less than 10 minutes' drive from Junction 21 of the M7.
Karmann Lodge, Bellegrove
€349,999 DNG Kelly (057) 862 3880
It will take under an hour to drive from Karmann Lodge to Dublin, as the M7 motorway is about three kilometres away. To avoid the stress of driving, you might travel by train instead from Portarlington. Karmann Lodge is a detached stone-fronted dormer on one-and-a-half acres. The house is 1,968 sq ft with three upstairs bedrooms (one ensuite) and a fourth on the ground floor. There's also a kitchen/dining room with a solid-fuel stove, a sitting room with a fireplace fitted with another stove, and a sunroom.
