Inishmacatreer

This detached bungalow is not just by a lake, it's actually on a lake. It's situated on Inishmacatreer Island on Lough Corrib which, conveniently enough, is connected to the mainland by a causeway. As you cross that you'll also cross the border into Co Mayo. The house measures 1,326 sq ft, all on one floor, with four bedrooms at one end of the entrance hall. By way of living areas there's a sitting room with a marble fireplace and lake views, and an open-plan kitchen and lounge with a separate utility. There's also a detached garage on the grounds.

Robin Hill

Until 1950, the lakeside village of Loch Gowna was known as Scrabby, and Robin Hill was its parsonage until 1952. Later it became a guest house, 'The Robin Hill', until the late 1990s, and it's still owned by the same family. It's got 2,583 sq ft on two floors, with the first floor holding all six bedrooms (four of these are doubles) and a bathroom. Downstairs there are two formal bay-windowed reception rooms, with an open fire in one and a wood burning stove in the other, along with a sunroom, a study and a dual-aspect kitchen with an Aga. The grounds amount to 2.4 acres with a profusion of mature trees and shrubs.

Part of Lough Gara in Co Sligo is a wildfowl sanctuary, where you can spot Greenland White-fronted Geese, Whooper Swans and Mute Swans, and various ducks, among other birds. Lough Gara Lodge in Cuppanagh, is a few hundred metres from the lake shore where there's a slipway into the water for boating fans. It was built in a traditional style some 20 years ago and stands at 1,238 sq ft with three bedrooms (one en suite) and an open-plan kitchen, sitting room and dining room. It's on just under half (0.46) of an acre with a lawn, patio and stone outbuildings.
