Penrose Street

Penrose Street is in the heart of South Lotts, and hence very much Old Dublin. It's also very much New Dublin, being less than half a kilometre from Grand Canal Dock station and Google Docks. Number 7 is on the southern side of the street, giving it a back garden that faces full south and, while it's a small space at about 13ft square, it has room for seating. You reach it from French doors in the recently fitted kitchen. At the front is a living room with a gas-fitted fireplace, and there are two bedrooms on the first floor. The en-suite master bedroom is at attic level. The house measures 990 sq ft in all.

60 Pembroke Cottages, Donnybrook

Pembrooke Cottages

There are two sets of Pembroke Cottages in Dublin 4, one in Ringsend and one in Donnybrook, both built by the Earl of Pembroke to house estate workers. The Donnybrook variety is north of Donnybrook Road and south of Herbert Park, and Number 60 is less than 50 metres from the park. It measures only 619 sq ft but there's been inventive use of the space in a recent refurbishment. Officially it includes one bedroom which is at the back, beyond the living room and kitchen. However, there's a second (non-regulation) bedroom at attic level, with windows in the floor there into the living room below.

3 Herbert Place, Irishtown

Herbert Place

When Herbert Place was built it was close to the sea, but large-scale land reclamation means it's now a kilometre from the water at the north end of Sandymount Strand, or eight minutes' walk from the Liffey, and Poolbeg Yacht Club. Number 3 is midway down the street, equidistant from Pembroke Street and Bath Street, and 15 minutes' walk from Lansdowne Road station. Its had a recent makeover inside and out, with a decked rear garden. The whole ground floor is open-plan, 35 ft long, with a kitchen, dining area and living room. The first floor has two bedrooms and a bathroom, in a floor area of 818 sq ft.

29 Harmony Avenue, Donnybrook

Harmony Avenue

Harmony Avenue is just as agreeable as it sounds. It's a discreet cul-de-sac running east off Brookvale Road, near the River Dodder, and lined with attractive, early 20th-century gabled cottages. Number 29 has reportedly been owned by the same family since it was built and it has been well looked-after. It's 764 sq ft with two bedrooms upstairs. One of these is rather special as, along with an en-suite shower, it gives onto a railed roof garden. The ground floor has a front living room and an eat-in kitchen with a door to the back patio garden. Beyond the garden is Donnybrook Scout Hall.
