Choice of pool in Malahide
Fairacre, Swords Road €2m
An indoor swimming pool was built at the back of Fairacre, a huge detached mansion at Swords Road in Malahide, Co Dublin. But at some point the owners had a change of heart about the pool and decided to change it to a games room and bar instead.
It's a question of priorities, really. Which do you think is more important - the chance to compete against yourself in the 100-metre front crawl, or the chance to hustle your friends at pool while downing shots of red-eye into the wee hours?
As it's constituted at present, the former pool room at Fairacre is all set up for the latter. It has a fully equipped bar, complete with bar stools and counter, a snooker table and some sofas arranged around a solid-fuel stove, for those ill-advised heart-to-heart chats that tend to happen under the influence.
The selling agents advise that it should be relatively straightforward to convert it back to a swimming pool though, if that's what floats your boat instead. Possibly you could even get the best of both worlds, by installing for yourself the pinnacle of first-world recreational affluence - a swim-up bar.
The house has no shortage of other recreation areas too. Elsewhere on the ground floor there's a bay-windowed lounge, another sitting room with a door to the garden, a dining room with a Howth stone fireplace, and a TV room.
There's also a huge (40ft by 12ft ) kitchen with a green Stanley range and French doors, and a utility room with a door to an integral garage.
Upstairs there's an office and five bedrooms. Four of them are en suite, and the master suite has a Jacuzzi bath.
The grounds come to half an acre and include a garden room and a steel shed.
