Sir Francis Beaufort, who invented the eponymous scale of wind force, was born in Navan in May 1774. Unfortunately, his birthplace of Beaufort House was later demolished to make way for a new road.

There's a nursing home on the site now, and nearby is a plaque rather inadequately commemorating Beaufort's achievements. No doubt, in the fullness of time, plaques will be erected in honour of some of Navan's other famous sons, too – Pierce Brosnan, Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran ... Hector Ó hEochagáin ...

Hunters Lodge, at Neillstown, about four miles from Navan, is on 28 acres of land, mostly in tillage. The house itself is set back 200 metres from the road behind electric gates, and has 3,400 square feet of floor space. Off the chequer-tiled entrance hall is a dining room measuring 18 feet by just under 17. The kitchen is 24 feet by 16 and has a boot room and utility off it.

Also leading from the kitchen is a family room, linked by double doors to a sunroom. The master bedroom is downstairs, with an en suite bathroom, while there are four more bedrooms upstairs, one of which is en-suite, along with a family bathroom.

Toward the front and side of the house is a paddock, and there's a detached garage on the grounds with a wood-burning stove, which could be used as an office.

Hunters Lodge is about 45 minutes' drive from Dublin via the M3. It's for sale through Sherry FitzGerald (01 237 6308) for €850,000.
