Become self-sufficient in Enfield
Kilmurray House €499k
As so many homebuyers found out during the boom, money goes a lot farther outside the capital - a realisation that condemned many of them to a soul-destroying daily commute from somewhere in the bowels of Co Laois.
Enfield, though, is well known for being within reasonably easy commuting distance of Dublin. You can drive there in about an hour via the M4, or get there by train in about the same time.
Kilmurray House, just inside the Kildare border about five kilometres from Enfield, is for sale for €499,000 - roughly the price of a four-bed semi in Rathfarnham. The Dublin 14 semi may have certain advantages over Meath, but it can't compete with Kilmurray House when it comes to size and space.
Built in 1995 in the Georgian style, Kilmurray House is a rambling 4,200 sq ft inside, and outside there's just under an acre (0.9) of land designed to appeal to self-sufficiency types. The grounds include a detached garage and workshop, as well as a poultry enclosure, raised fruit and vegetable garden, lawns, decks, fountain and fish pond.
The house aims at a form of self-sufficiency inside too, as it has its own games room, complete with a marble-topped bar and a pool table. You might move to Enfield without ever getting to know the neighbours.
Separately, there's another sitting room with a fireplace, and a TV room with built-in bookshelves. The last of the living areas is a large kitchen and dining room opening through French doors into a sunroom with a vaulted ceiling.
On the first floor there are five bedrooms, two en-suite, and there's more sleeping accommodation in a little self-contained guesthouse on the grounds, which has a kitchen/living room and an en-suite bedroom.
Kilmurray House is for sale at €499k with Charters Estate Agents in Maynooth (01) 651 7000.
