Architect's D12 hideaway
16A Greentrees Drive €498k
The late architect Joseph Lawlor was forever complaining about being restricted by his clients. So when it came to designing a house for himself, he relished the thought of doing it "exactly the way he wanted it".
This was the early 1980s, and Lawlor was drawing up plans for his family home in what used to be the garden of Number 16A Greentrees Drive, off Whitehall Road West in Dublin 12.
The house was finally completed in 1989, and it seems to have been exactly what both architect and client wanted in this case.
What Lawlor wanted was a house that would be "barely noticeable" in its surroundings, and he succeeded in that.
Its surroundings consist of a very inviting garden, with a lawn and specimen trees, and there is so much glass in the house that the garden is almost part of the rooms.
It's 1,571 sq ft, all on one floor, with four bedrooms (three doubles and a single). The master bedroom is en-suite, and there's a family bathroom.
The door opens into an entrance doubling as a lean-to conservatory, with sliding doors to the garden, where there's a gravelled seating area for warm days.
By way of living rooms, the main one is an open-plan sitting and dining room measuring just under 30ft by 20ft, with a brick fireplace, corner windows and a round window bringing the light and the garden inside.
The kitchen is smallish by today's standards, measuring some 14ft by 9ft. It's galley-style and dual-aspect, with round windows on two walls.
The gardens wrap around the house and are big enough to wander about in. The side garden is 101ft by 46ft and the back garden is 46ft by 20ft, and there are trees and shrubs, as well as off-street parking at the front.
Number 16A Greentrees Drive is for sale for €498,000 with DNG Terenure (01) 490 9000.
