Warren Street, near Portobello harbour in Dublin 8, stands on the site of the former City Basin – the reservoir along the Grand Canal that was filled in in the late 19th century.
The basin was replaced by several streets of housing in the burgeoning neighbourhood that would soon come to be known as Little Jerusalem, such was the influx of Jewish refugees setting up home in the area.
Number 2 Warren Street was owned by a family of pawnbrokers in the early 20th century. The couple had ten children, of whom only four survived, and all were obliged to live together in what must have been very cramped conditions.
The house would still have to be described as relatively small by the standards of today’s family homes too. However, it’s quite a bit bigger than many other city-centre pads, at 775 sq ft.

It’s about a kilometre from St Stephen’s Green, and if that’s too far to walk, you can pick up a Dublin Bike on the Grand Canal 100 metres away. And if you’re heading farther afield, the nearest Luas stop is at Harcourt Street, a little over half a kilometre away.
