€495k River Glebe House comes with a hexagonal gate lodge and coach houses
River Glebe House €495k
On the first-edition (1840s) Ordnance Survey Map, an observatory is marked on the grounds of River Glebe, a rectory outside Toomevara in north Co Tipperary, which suggests that the incumbent clergyman must have combined a love of science with his doctrinal interests.
The house was built about 1820 and strikes a handsome pose on the landscape, with a two-storey front façade and two storeys over a basement elsewhere. It's on five acres of gardens, paddock and parkland - enough space for a pony or two.
The current owners have set about refurbishing the house, including replacing the roof. They've preserved the original features including ceiling corning and sash windows, and if you hope to carry out further works you should bear in mind that it is on Tipperary County Council's Register of Protected Structures.
It's 3,252 sq ft with four bedrooms on the first floor (one en-suite). Some of the ground floor reception rooms have been combined to create an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting room, which has French doors to the garden. The kitchen has an Aga, and there's a solid-fuel stove in the dining room and an open fire in the sitting room. Down in the half-basement there's another en-suite bedroom and two more rooms.
On the grounds are various outbuildings including lofted coach houses. Planning permission was granted in 2006 to convert these into self-catering accommodation, but this has expired now. There's also a hexagonal gate lodge that needs complete renovation. Elsewhere the gardens are lawned with mature trees, hedging and flowerbeds, and there's a stream on the western boundary.
It's half a kilometre from Toomevara and 10 minutes' drive from the M7 (Junction 24).
River Glebe House is for sale with Savills Country (01) 663 4350 and is priced at €495,000.
