Inistioge is widely regarded as the prettiest town in Co Kilkenny, with a beautiful ten-arched bridge over the Nore, and the Woodstock estate gardens just outside the village.
ecause of this, it's been the setting for several films, including 'Circle of Friends' and 'Widows' Peak'.
In the centre of Inistioge village, on the corner of Main Street and Mill Road, is the Moat House (or Motte House), a three-storey period property up the street from the village green. If you lived here, nothing that happened in Inistioge could possibly escape your notice.
Built around 1850, The Moat House is a listed building, but it's already been extensively renovated. It stands at 2,800 sq ft, with five bedrooms.
There are two main reception rooms on the ground floor. One is a drawing room with a cast-iron stove and double doors to the back garden. The other is a dining room, where there's a marble fireplace and a sash window with a window seat.
Double doors in the dining open to the kitchen, with a double-height ceiling and French doors to the courtyard. There's also a utility room off the kitchen.
There's a shower room on the first floor return, and two bedrooms on the first floor proper, including the master bedroom, where there's an original fireplace and an en-suite bathroom with a corner bath. The second floor has another three bedrooms.
Out the back of the house is a courtyard surrounded by old stone walls, with steps up to a pedestrian exit onto Main Street. The small front garden has a lawn and hedging.
Inistioge is about 25 kilometres from Kilkenny city, and something under two hours' drive from Dublin via the M9 motorway.
The Moat House is for sale for €325,000 with Sherry FitzGerald Radford in New Ross, (051) 426 161.
