Silversmiths Frederick Winder & Charles Lamb dissolved their partnership in 1893, but Lamb kept the business going and his pieces crop up at auction from time to time.

An Edinburgh-born Presbyterian and a single man, Lamb lived for years as a boarder at No18 Vernon Street, and is found there with his landlady in 1901 and 1911.

No18 measures 1,055 sq ft, with two first-floor bedrooms. At entrance level, there's a formal sitting room with a bay window and fireplace, and down a short flight of steps is an extended kitchen, dining room and living room with French doors to a paved and gravelled garden.

The garden of No16 Bloomfield Park is to the side, rather than the back - an advantage in this case as it means it's south-facing and quite private.

You reach the terrace from French doors in the single-storey kitchen extension, where there's a vaulted ceiling and skylights. At the front is a living room with a solid-fuel stove, and there are two bedrooms and a shower room upstairs in an overall floor area of 764 sq ft.

Bloomfield Park itself is a cul de sac off Bloomfield Avenue, which runs north-south between the South Circular and Portobello Road.

3 Oakfield Place

In an article on 19th century Jewish Immigration for Field Day Review, Cormac O Gráda described the settlement of Oakfield Place from the 1880s. No3, he writes, having been occupied by Jews for almost eight decades, had in the early 21st century, a poster in its front window urging a boycott of Israeli goods.

The place has changed hands since, having last sold in 2011, and has been extended to 883 sq ft. It has two bedrooms right of the entrance hall, both with fireplaces. To the left are two reception rooms and at the back is the extended, open-plan kitchen, dining and living room, with sliding doors to a small gravelled garden.

6 Windsor Terrace

The houses at the eastern end of Windsor Terrace are some of the oldest in Portobello, having been built in about 1820.

Unlike its neighbours, No6 has had its render removed, and also unlike some of its neighbours, it still has a proper, flower-filled front garden rather than a driveway.

There's a long (40ft) back yard as well should you hope to expand the house above its current 1,335 sq ft of space. That includes two reception rooms, an eat-in kitchen and a lean-to sunroom on the ground floor, and three bedrooms (one ensuite) upstairs.
