Author Marian Keyes and Oscar-nominated film director Lenny Abrahamson have lent their support to a Dublin woman who is currently searching for her missing 15-year-old dog.

Bebhinn Nutty’s dog Rio ran away on New Year’s Eve in Garristown in north Dublin when he became frightened by fireworks.

He is microchipped, but he has limited sight and hearing and Bebhinn fears he might be injured.

“He’s my little pet, he’s a member of the family, so we’re very close,” Bebhinn told Independent.ie.

“He’s got limited sight, cataracts, and poor hearing. So that’ll show you how loud the fireworks were.”

“He would ramble a small bit into neighbouring fields, so I assumed he’d come back. But now he doesn’t seem to be in the neighbourhood. He might have been hit and in a ditch somewhere.”

Bebhinn added: “I reckon what happened is that he got frightened by the fireworks at 10pm and ran off, and then he came across more fireworks and ran off again. He may be injured, or worse, somewhere else."

The Nutty family have ruled out the fact that Rio is anywhere near their home, and they've put an appeal out on Twitter and Facebook to help find him.

"We walk a lot in this neighbourhood so even if he got a little lost, I’d have thought he’d be able to find his way back.”

“We got him from the pound when he was a puppy. He’s a lucky dog, he’s well looked-after.”
