I love a list. My list is usually long and at the end of every day I inevitably ‘carry’ half of it into the next day, when I begin to hate my list. Just looking at my list is exhausting at times. But then, so is modern life. We’re running to catch up to its expectations and in doing so, we’re leaving ourselves behind, our lists becoming the symbols of our busy lives. We are all so very, very tired.

I just stared blankly at my daughter while she asked me the same question four times, and all while I was standing in front of the fridge contemplating having a half-eaten banana for dinner because I was just too tired to cook. It’s a fundamental tiredness that slinks after us like our own shadows and makes us stand in front of fridges staring at rotting bananas for the best part of the day.
