'Stay at home' to prevent flu spread

The winter vomiting virus is particularly prevalent this season and is likely to remain a risk until at least the end of February.

There was a tripling of reported cases in Ireland over five weeks at the end of last year.

Symptoms include:

• suddenly feeling sick

• projectile vomiting

• watery diarrhoea

The advice is to stay at home and not go to your GP surgery or hospital to avoid spreading it. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. Avoid giving fizzy drinks or fruit juice to children as it can make their diarrhoea worse. Babies should continue to feed as usual, either with breast milk or other milk feeds.

Take paracetamol for any fever or aches and pains and get plenty of rest.

If you feel like eating, eat plain foods, such as soup, rice, pasta and bread.

Flu can spread very easily, so wash hands regularly while ill, and stay off work.
