Pharmacist offers rapid throat test
Boots has announced the launch of its sore throat test and treatment services.
It promises rapid detection testing for the most common cause of bacterial sore throat.
A trained pharmacist can carry out an assessment including, where necessary, a rapid throat swab test.
This can quickly detect the presence of Group A Beta Haemolytic Streptococcus (GABHS), also known as Strep A, the most common cause of bacterial sore throat infections.
Patients who display symptoms and whose test results are indicative of a bacterial infection will be referred to a GP.
As the majority of sore throats are caused by a virus, patients can be offered treatments in the pharmacy rather making a trip to their doctor where they could end up asking for an antibiotic.
