Mindful moment… Learn to laugh at yourself

Learn to laugh at yourself.
Learn to laugh at yourself.

My dad used to use a lot of phrases when we were children. For every situation, he had a cheer-you-up motto. "Smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone…" was a favourite, as was: "Laugh at yourself and you'll always be laughing."

I have not been laughing at myself or anything very much recently. I've been too busy taking life VERY SERIOUSLY. I've been over-thinking and over-dramatising everything. I've been doing "woe is me" with bells on.

With all of this stress and worry and gloomy thinking, I am now boring myself. Enough!

Most of what I'm worrying about is totally ridiculous and most of the time my behaviour is totally ridiculous. Why not just laugh at it?

As Nora Ephron - the great filmmaker who wrote When Harry Met Sally - puts it: "When you slip on a banana peel, people laugh at you. But when you tell people you slipped on a banana peel, it's your laugh."
